:This course provides a small number of upper-year students with the unique opportunity to undertake hands-on work in prison law in support of the Jail Accountability and Information Line (JAIL Line), a phone line operated by community volunteers working in solidarity with people who are incarcerated at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre (OCDC) and their loved ones.This innovative course blends substantive learning in prison law with practical, hands-on experience providing legal information to the Ottawa community. Students will receive training on how to take phone calls on the JAIL Line. They will also support the JAIL LINE’s work by researching complex legal issues faced by prisoners at the OCDC.
Student work will be partially self-directed, and will include a mix of foundational lectures, student-led projects, and work in the community. Class time may be put to a variety of uses, including: overview lectures, group discussion...
