:This course examines the geological origin of a variety of natural disasters such as: earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides, avalanches, and floods. The students will gain a better understanding of how, where, and why these events occur, as well as of our ability to predict them. In order to better comprehend and appreciate the geological context in which these natural disasters occur, the following topics will also be discussed: the origin of the Earth, plate tectonics, mountain building, glaciations, and climate variability from a geological perspective.
